CURRIMUNDI LAKE DREDGED

In 2004, after two years of planning, the single largest step was taken to maintain Currimundi Lake’s water quality by dredging 170,000 cubic meters of excess silt and sand from the lake east of Nicklin Way. The silt and sand had built up over many years and was causing reduced tidal flushing resulting in poor water quality, algae blooms and an increased risk of flooding upstream.

CCCG and FOCL lobbied Council and the Environmental Protection Agency and worked with the contractor and Council for the best environmental outcome. It was identified that the lake would need ongoing maintenance over the long term, due to siltation and natural movement of sand.
